Republican Senator Indicted On 7 Counts

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator and a figure in Alaska politics since before statehood, has been indicted on seven counts of falsely reporting hundreds of thousands of dollars in services he received from a company that helped renovate his home.

Stevens, 84, has been dogged by a federal investigation into whether he pushed for fishing legislation that also benefited his son, an Alaska lobbyist.

From May 1999 to August 2007, prosecutors said Stevens concealed “his continuing receipt of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of things of value from a private corporation.” The indictment released Tuesday said the items included: home improvements to his vacation home in Alaska, including a new first floor, garage, wraparound deck, plumbing, electrical wiring; as well as car exchanges, a Viking gas grill, furniture and tools.

Justice Department officials were holding a news conference later Tuesday to discuss the charges.

Messages left Tuesday at both Stevens’ Senate office in Washington and his campaign office in Anchorage were not immediately returned.

Prosecutors said Stevens “took multiple steps to continue” receiving things from oil services company VECO Corp., and its founder, Bill Allen. At the time, the indictment says, Allen and other VECO employees were soliciting Stevens for “multiple official actions …. knowing that Stevens could and did use his official position and his office on behalf of VECO during that same time period.”

This indictment was about four years in the making so there’s no real surprise for the GOP.

It’s amazing how long it takes to indict a Republican criminal. However, an innocent Dem like Don Seligman, you don’t even need a crime, just a nod from Carl Rove in order to get thrown in jail. Now there’s a man who needs to become someone’s prison wife, Rove.

Just another criminal politician, this is why we should vote them all out every time they come up for reelection. Alcee Hastings (my representative) is a disbarred judge, he got caught taking bribes. Then hired his lawyer, who he couldn’t afford to pay, he owed her %500,000 for defending him, to one of his office workers for $120,00 per year. Wexler hasn’t had a permanent residence in Florida in 7 years, he uses his mother in-laws address. He lives in Maryland. Stevens is also famous for his pork spending on the bridge to no where. I crossed the bridge, it did go somewhere, you just couldn’t go very far. I did scare the heck out of my wife, my Mother in-law, and her brother when I went over it. You could see through the expansion joints and look at the river. The river was caused by global warming, the glacier was melting.

    Hey Flip,
You may get your wish. Rove is being charged with contempt. Now let’s see if Congress actually has the spine to do anything about it. I don’t think Pelosi has the stomach for it.
